Unchained Productions originated from a close friend who commissioned me to create a typography-style logo for their personal videography projects and YouTube channel. Throughout this process, I was adamant about exploring typography, and my friend agreed that this was the direction she wanted to go. Through making this, I quickly discovered that I enjoy experimenting with negative space and using it creatively to accomplish a desired effect or word; in this case, it was “Unchained”. We also took heavy inspiration from space or otherworldly aesthetics, which gave the typography this futuristic/alien-like feel.
Below are some of the early stages of the design process, including the initial concept art and the final logo—a sleek, minimalistic mark that captured the identity we were aiming for.
The Process
Before I landed on the spaceship, most of my sketched leaned into astronauts and chain links, but these ideas seemed so cliche and my client’s logo font wouldn’t stand out is an astronaut icon took up most of the attention.
While refining one of the designs we had agreed to explore, the idea struck me to place a small spaceship above the “A,” and suddenly everything clicked.
Creating a font, and unique identity that my client could use on her Youtube channel. I love experimenting with letterforms and shaping them from unexpected objects, and this project was a perfect opportunity to do just that.
